The recall of dog and cat food that started on March 16, 2007, has
spread in subsequent weeks to more than 100 brands of food, most sold
in cans and pouches but also including some treats. Since the March
31 issue of WDW News, we have regularly updated the news in our
special article on the status of the recall and all of its
ramifications.

Today, May 1, scientists in Canada and the United States reported on
tests that they believe finally show the cause of kidney problems and
deaths in cats and dogs that spurred the food recalls.
Two contaminants -- melamine and cyanuric acid -- together led to the
formation of crystals that likely caused the kidney problems in the
pets, they reported.
Our online article gives you a look at the food safety crisis as it
unfolded, and also tells more about why melamine and cyanuric acid
were added to foods such as wheat gluten and rice protein concentrate
imported from China for manufacture of pet food. And what action the
FDA has taken to protect animal and human health.
Also provided are sources of advice from veterinarians at the
American Veterinary Medical Association and at Washington State
University College of Veterinary Medicine.
